Use your Mac mini from Windows — no extra app on Windows

RDPyon runs an RDP server on your Mac mini, so the Remote Desktop Connection (mstsc) that already comes with Windows can connect to it. You install RDPyon on the Mac. You install nothing on the Windows PC.

Who this is for

iOS builds and Xcode

You write code on Windows and keep a Mac mini for Xcode, signing and App Store builds. Open the Mac's screen from your Windows PC when you need it.

A home server or media Mac

Your Mac mini sits on a shelf running files, media or small services. Reach its desktop from any Windows PC on your network without walking over to it.

One Mac, several PCs

Every Windows PC already has Remote Desktop Connection, so each one can connect to the same Mac mini without installing or signing in to another tool.

First-time setup

  1. 1. Install RDPyon on the Mac mini

Download the .dmg from the download page, open it, and drag RDPyon into the Applications folder. Open the app from Applications. It runs from the menu bar.

  2. 2. Allow the permissions

Allow Screen Recording and Accessibility in System Settings under Privacy & Security, then restart the app.

  3. 3. Find the connection address

Click the RDPyon icon in the menu bar. The menu shows the Local IP and the Port. The default port is 3389.

  4. 4. Connect with mstsc on Windows

Press the Windows key and R, then run the command below with your Mac mini's address and port. Choose Use a different account and sign in with the Mac's short account name and login password.

    mstsc /v:192.168.1.20:3389 /prompt

Good to know

  • Log in to the Mac before you connect. RDPyon starts as a login item, so it is not running at the login window right after a restart or log out, and you cannot connect there. Turn on automatic login for the Mac mini (System Settings, Users & Groups) so it signs in by itself after a restart. Automatic login is not available while FileVault is on.
  • Connect a monitor or an HDMI dummy plug to the Mac mini for now. Using a Mac mini without a display is not supported yet.
  • If the screen is locked, connecting may fail. Unlock the Mac first. If the screen locks during a session, the connection ends with the default setting ("Disconnect when screen locks" is on).
  • RDPyon shares the session that is already logged in, one session at a time. Use it on a trusted network or through a VPN, and do not forward port 3389 from your router to the Mac.

FAQ

Do I need to install anything on Windows?

No. You connect with Remote Desktop Connection (mstsc.exe), which is part of Windows. RDPyon is installed on the Mac only.

Can I connect right after the Mac mini restarts?

Not at the login window. Connect after the Mac has logged in. Turning on automatic login makes the Mac mini sign in by itself after a restart, so RDPyon starts again.

Does it work with no monitor attached?

Not yet. For now, keep a monitor or an HDMI dummy plug connected to the Mac mini.

Does it work from outside my home network?

Use a VPN that reaches your home network, then connect to the Mac mini's address as usual. Do not open port 3389 on your router to the internet.
